RAW PINK

RAW PINK is a collection of works that focuses on the power of femme aesthetics – specifically those connected to trans female self-preservation and survival. As a maker, I am drawn to visual contradictions: the softness and hardness that is evident in feminine and masculine aesthetics and the effects that such visual information yields upon viewers when such opposites collide in a single space.

I Didn't Want to be Right

Join us for the On and Off Fred Rd. Tour - Mantle is pleased to present new work from artist Tilley Stone.

In this exhibition, Stone explores personal objects and the historical context around heroin addiction -- a growing epidemic currently affecting millions of Americans. Parallels are drawn between the violation of a domestic space and the pervasive elements of colonialism by which heroin addiction spread. Domestic items transform into paraphernalia, strategically concealing a dual purpose. They become the forefront of the exhibition as Stone reflects on her experiences and evaluates the overarching effects.

Viewing available during On and Off Fred Rd. Tour.

Some Personal Space

Paintings by Lana Waldrep-Appl

Words from the artist:

"I often joke that I make art for introverts. I am not entirely joking.

I make paintings of the anonymous spaces that I so love—simple corners of not-so-important buildings, the niche that a water fountain occupies, a small piece of a generic dentist office. In an anonymous space, I can be anonymous. I can be invisible. I can turn totally inward. I can take a breath. I can refocus my mind. I emphasize the geometry of these spaces in my work, because the orderliness of geometric forms is a great vehicle for contemplation. Subtlety of color—chromatic grays and variety of pastels—allow the paintings to unfold with time and space and require that viewers be both physically and mentally present with the work."

Beautifully Apart

New Paintings on view by San Antonio artist Cassie Gnehm.

"For centuries men have controlled the way women’s bodies have been represented in art and culture. By repainting these female forms, she is taking back control of the female figure. She works from installations of open books and post cards of historical figure paintings scattered on the studio floor and then paints them from life. These observational oil paintings comment on the male gaze of artist throughout art history while overlaying features of contemporary women."

Print Exchange [Submissions Due]

MANTLE IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR Second ANNUAL PRINT EXCHANGE

Theme: Disguise

Mantle will be accepting prints for a portfolio exchange. The complete portfolio will be exhibited at the gallery in San Antonio, TX in September 2018

What is a Print Exchange?

Artists commit to creating an identical (or as close to identical as possible) edition of their design and submit to the organizing group (Mantle Art Space). They will receive a full portfolio containing a print from each of the participating artists. For example: An artist creates 21 numbered prints and receives everyone else's number #4 from the other editions.

Basically; Submit a print, get 20 different prints back.

Guidelines:

  • Artists of all levels and print media accepted. We are looking for contemporary work with any interpretation on the theme.

  • The print edition is 21 - If more than 20 artists are accepted, portfolios will still include 20 (randomized) prints. One complete set will be kept as part of the collection at Mantle Art Space following the exhibition.

  • Final paper size is 11" x 14"

  • The entry fee is $40 - this includes a portfolio mailed back to the artist at the completion of the show. The fee is due upon acceptance and may be paid online.

  • Artists should apply with example prints and/or digital portfolio links. Artists may include a concept for a print, but this is not required.

Confluence - Works by Alex McKenzie

"The rate of information exchange today leaves many of us feeling powerless. It can be isolating and often force a sense of doubt in relation to our beliefs, ideology, and self-image. The information overload is much like semantic satiation; repetition can lead to detachment.

My recent work explores broader existential issues often concerning conviction, truth, and identity as they pertain to the rapidly evolving culture surrounding information exchange."

UNLOADING | a mother's body

new works by sara corley martinez

words from the artist:

Motherhood is loaded with all sorts of expectations and ideas of control.  Since the moment of conception as a mother you are not in control. You are at the mercy of your own body and bodily function.  This work seeks to discuss the irregularity and chaos of those bodily functions during and after pregnancy. I am specifically thinking about the relationship between what comes out of the body and fine art materials.  This work is not meant to idolize or vilify the experience of pregnancy. Beauty, discomfort, and ideas of absurdity are up for interpretation, much like the real experience and transformation of pregnancy.
